Pointe des Monts

I'm starting to get the days mixed up. Was this Thursday or Friday? It's a real mind twister in the morning waking up and wondering where you are. I know today is Sunday and we are in Sept Isles at the HI hostel. It's a good homey place to take a shower, cook in a real kitchen etc. The past few days have been very full so Henry is taking an afternoon nap while I post the first part of the blog.
Our Lonely Planet guide book took us to Pointe des Monts (it's not even on the road map) because it has one of Quebec's oldest lighthouses. Had to have a picture of that to hang beside our Burwell lighthouse picture! It also had a cute little cabin (with shower!) to stay the night AND a complimentary breakfast.

It was a really cool museum. Each floor was filled with artifacts, pictures and stories of the people and lighthouse keepers that lived there. (Luckily they had a handy dandy English guide book to go with it!) Quite a cold, brutal and desolate life back then. The top gave us a beautiful view of the whole area. We spent the afternoon sight seeing, biking and exploring the rocks. We also got to really watch how the tides worked. That night we had a brilliant full moon reflecting on the water. In the morning I also watched whales surfacing. It was so cool. The water goes really deep just off shore so you can see them quite close. It's just not that easy taking a good picture.
Before we left Henry struck up a super helpful conversation with a fellow adventurer named Pierre. He had his motorcycle clamped on a really unique carrier to the back of his truck. They talked about where he got it, and other techi guy things. He also had great ideas for us in our travels up/down the road. Thank-you Pierre, we are still working on your ferry idea.
We left with a good promise of a beach day down the road.

Wish I had left home: the electric tea kettle, boiling water on the gas stove is so much faster. That tea kettle doesn't fit anywhere anyway, except under the bed.

  2. We grew up with the tides. If we wanted to go bike to the Wadden Zee,8k.north for a swim, it would be nicer if it was high tide otherwise we had to walk a long way on the wet soil. Later when I left home they got a swimming pool in Franeker. We did swim in a new canal before it was connected to the the old one too. It was very deep and I just learned to swim without lessons, I got to the other side.Later we swam in a canal where rats swam too. Survived that too without getting sick. I guess we got anough antibodies doing these things.

  3. Note to Pierre: The ferry in Natashquan puts your vehicle in a container. It has to be no more than 6'10" high and wide and 19'4". The cost for the vehicle is about $470. You get a berth on the boat for $226 a person. I would still have done it. It would have been like a mini cruise. Unfortunately, you have to book about 6 months in advance. And since we are flying/touring by the seat of our pants it's a no-go, at least this time. Next best thing I guess is to see the movie 'The Grand Seduction'. Thanks anyway!
